Countdown to the Ball: 8 days
Yesterday I finally got down to Joann Fabrics for a couple bits and pieces that I needed for my dress. But got home too late for sewing and today was all about getting the kid ready. While I figured out the doublet details, O made himself a pair of every day pants. He's still mastering the sewing machine, but gets better with every try. Almost no stitch ripping today.
I started with tracing the pattern pieces onto clear plastic. I didn't need to make a ton of alterations because he fit the standard pretty well; I just brought in the shoulders a bit
The pants were cut out of the green...taffeta? I have no idea what this fabric is made of, but I'm going to guess a poly of some sort. I'm very lucky that he picked two candy's that I happen to have a lot of, and I'm looking forward to using them up.
O has given me absolute freedom to create; he has voiced very few opinions about things. One was a lack of of lace and ruffles on his shirt, the other was the colors- he wanted green and gold and black, which fits very well with Adam and my outfits. For inspiration, I really liked this portrait:
I like the slashing and the trim placement a lot. I trialed a few options for finishing the edges of the slashes, but ended up stitching it down directly to the gold base to prevent fraying or being caught on anything.
I ran diagonals of velvet ribbon braiding between the slashes. I'm debating adding some beading to that trim. Also have some black braid coming that will bulk out the rest of the trim detail, similar to the portrait layout.
I sketched out a few ideas for the slashing on the back before settling on the final design. I have to finish tacking them open but ran out of steam for the night.
I also ran out of the trim that I had on hand, so I'm waiting for the rest to come in the mail. But hopefully I can get the pants done in the meantime, as those have no trim.
