Boy's Viking Outfit
My nephew will be attending his first SCA event this weekend and we wanted to get him outfitted in style. Luckily, other than the leather for his boots, we were able to put together everything he's wearing from things in the house in under 72 hours.
His turnshoes I handled most of the making, and are documented in another blog post. O helped with turning them, adding the laces and cutting and gluing the soles.
The winnegas were cut from an old wool skirt that I picked apart. He hemmed them and sewed the hooks in place.
The linen from his pants were leftovers from a different project. He started sewing them and I jumped in to give him a hand.
The gray under tunic came from lightweight linen in the stash. The yellow tunic was found in the old garb bin of things that will go to donation at some point. It had been started years ago, for someone smaller than either Adam or me. I had sewn the body, sleeves and armpit gussets, and cut a neckline, but had not finished it. O helped me shorten the hem and I used the offcuts to add side gores. I had black raw silk in the stash and used that to trim the hem and sleeve cuffs. I also sewed a yoke of black silk to the existing neckline and then cut a new one to fit him better. It was finished with a little inkle trim that I had in the stash in just enough to trim the sleeve cuffs. We had only a few centimeters of overlap.
The hood and hat were made for Adam a few years ago, but fit the kid better. His cloak is linen from a pair of pants that I had just finished for Adam. O hemmed the edges and we added a brooch from my collection.
The sword is being lent from Adam's hoard (it's a practice blade with no edge) and Adam threw together a hanger for it.
All in all, he should be ready for his first event!
